This bull moose was not easy to find. Despite his immense size—nearly 1,800 pounds—he had spent the day hidden in plain sight, resting among the grasses and trees along the Gross Ventre River. Moose have an uncanny ability to disappear when they lie down, and I had been searching for hours when he finally revealed himself, wandering slowly through a corridor of falling aspen and birch leaves with a female at his side. Rather than retreat, he paused. In that stillness, his gaze met mine—calm, assessing, unmistakably aware. There was no challenge in his posture, only confidence. He knew this landscape belonged to him. In that brief exchange, I was not an intruder, but a witness. This image captures that moment of mutual acknowledgment—when wildness allows itself to be seen, on its own terms.
